Among our athletes tasting the bitter ashes of defeat were…

Eimear Maher, a brilliant 1500 race but pipped in the last few strides for a place in the European champs…

Elizabeth Ndudi, beaten for the gold medal by 5 cms – no Europeans.

Captain Ciarán Carthy – ill for the 400m and ran out of legs to finish 6th

Andrew McGilton loses a shoe in his 800 heat and had to run 350m in his size 11 socks.

And Ella Fennelly’s p.b. in the 5,000, a slightly irritating 16:00:34.
